Discover the natural reserve of La Vallée de Ferney

  • 26/09/2019

The Ferney Valley is a paradisiacal place in Mauritius. Located not far from the Old Grand Port in the south-east of the island, this park covering more than 200 hectares is a nature reserve that shelters a very rich fauna and flora of Mauritius. A gathering place for hikers and trekkers, the Ferney Valley is one of the most exciting and popular attractions on the island of the Indian Ocean. The setting and the environment When you discover the Ferney Valley, what strikes you from the start is the hilly landscapes of the site’s green and wooded hills. Sloping fields and pastures covered with green and open grass, and lush forests share the territory of this exotic valley with perfect harmony. In the distance, the shores of the Indian Ocean shine with a thousand lights where the turquoise blue of the immense expanse of water marries the green of the tropical forest. In the middle of the Valley run small streams of white water, sources of freshness and life for an impressive fauna and flora.A unique biodiversity This nature reserve is above all a biodiversity sanctuary where the rarest plant and animal species meet. Thus, in the heart of the Ferney Valley, walkers can see, at random, endemic species of Mauritius such as the Mauritius kestrel, a bird of prey of the falcon family, and very soon, a few examples of pink pigeons or Echo parakeets, it is promised. But the flora is not left to the contrary. Mauritius is rich in more than 700 native plants including more than 60 different species of orchids that can be easily crossed in the Ferney Valley.Hiking and excursions on the program In the Ferney Valley, tourists can walk on a 3 km long trail that allows in some places to have a unique panoramic view of Mahebourg Bay or the small islands off the Mauritian coast. 4×4 enthusiasts can choose an excursion that will last 1h30 and cover the ten kilometres of track laid out and traced in the valley in their motor vehicle. The 4×4 tour also allows visitors to fully enjoy the scenery from each panoramic point of view over the southeast of Mauritius. If you want to visit La Vallée de Ferney during your stay in Mauritius in our luxury resort, do not hesitate to contact the concierge service.

Discover the Labourdonnais Orchards in Mapou in the north of Mauritius

  • 12/09/2019

Born from an initiative of Christian Wiehe to create an orchard of historical collection, today there are about fifty hectares of commercial orchards that are located in the heart of the Domaine de Labourdonnais, in Mapou, in the north of the island. Nearly two thousand tons of fruit are produced annually and then processed into a range of authentic products. “Les Vergers de Labourdonnais” is one of the first orchards in Mauritius. About ten fruits, including mangoes, passion fruit, pineapple, papaya, guavas, lychees, citrus, and other citrus fruits, are grown there all year round. The managers at that time were visionary and had the idea of turning to the fruit processing market. In 1995, the brand was created and production began with five flavors of fruit pastes and four types of jams. With “innovation” as motto, the company diversified its activities and started manufacturing fresh fruit juices, sorbets, ice creams and chili pepper paste with fruit. Initially, the products of the Orchards of Labourdonnais are offered to the hotel sector. Today, this market is one of the business’ largest customers. But then, in order to pass on its products to Mauritians, it redirects part of its production to the island’s supermarkets. On reaching the Labourdonnais estate, it is possible to get to know the surroundings by VTT or simply walking. A guided visit is available. There are many fruit trees, but also perfumed exotic flowers. During the walk in the gardens, visitors will have the opportunity to stop in a park where giant Aldabra turtles graze quietly. At the end of the visit, you can enjoy a meal at La Terrasse which is on the property itself. Meals vary from local cuisine to international dishes. If you want to visit the Labourdonnais Orchards during your stay in Mauritius in our luxury resort, do not hesitate to contact the concierge service.

Celebrating Divali in Mauritius

  • 05/09/2019
  • Culture

In Mauritius, the inhabitants celebrate Divali in the hope of making a fresh start and removing the negative aspects of their lives. If the national holiday is also known as the festival of lights, it is because it alone symbolizes the importance of the phenomenon. Celebrated between October and November every year, the Divali festival also celebrates the coming of summer in the Indian Ocean. On the first day of the festival, at dusk, coloured garlands and thousands of candles light up the streets and squares of the island, transforming it into a magical and almost unreal place. The subsequent festival embodies the victory of good over evil: the annihilation of the demon Narakasura and the triumphant victory of Lord Rama. The Divali festival pays tribute to the wife of the god Vishnu, the goddess Luckshmi. She always accompanies her husband when he comes to earth and embodies a human being helping men to fight evil. Rama, Vishnu’s seventh avatar, and his wife Sita, are forced to leave the palace after being victims of perverse intrigues. Completely destitute and rejected, they wander alone in the rainforest. Sita is kidnapped by the demon Ravena while Rama forms an alliance with the monkey army to rescue her. Ravena was killed during the clash. Sita is then delivered and the spouses return together to the palace where they are welcomed by a people so happy that it illuminates the whole city with thousands of lights. Since then, Divali’s feast has celebrated Sita’s return with this sacred formula and symbol of peace: “Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Shanti! »As soon as the sun rises, women and men pray together. All family members are reunited: men and children seek God’s blessing while women do the complete housework. Hindu families then prepare some specialities of sweets and cakes and then go to visit their relatives, regardless of their religion. Among Mauritian culinary specialities, “gâteau patate” is the essential pastry during the festival of lights. It is prepared in very large numbers and consists of a delicious sweet potato fritter stuffed with coconut and sugar and fried in oil. The Divali festival is above all a time of sharing and unification of all Mauritian communities, whether Muslim, Hindu or Catholic. A day at the Port Louis Central Market

  • 29/08/2019
  • Daily life

What better way to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a country than to stroll through its markets? Colors, scents, atmosphere: awaken all your senses and discover a concentrate of the island at the central market. You will find both foodstuffs and traditional spices and medicinal plants, some of which are renowned aphrodisiacs! The section devoted to crafts is well provided but be careful, not everything is locally made. The central market of Port Louis is one of the oldest sites on the island (more than 2 centuries). Whatever the time of year, this market on Queen Street near the main bus station is open every day. Popular with Mauritians, there is an abundance of fruit and vegetables of impeccable quality throughout the year. The fruit and vegetable part is under a covered area which is very practical because the sun is strong even in winter in Port Louis (the period when we were there). We advise you if you can, to go there early in the morning to avoid the crowd. Traders will try to attract the attention of visitors by praising the freshness of their products or convincing them of the virtues of their herbal tea. In the meantime, visitors feel, evaluate and market vegetables. Further on, the spice bags are displayed, like gold coin purses. Bright and fragrant, chili or turmeric await to join the pan!On the first floor of the market, you will find the unmissable tourist souvenirs, including model boats and other jewelries. At the central market, our senses are put to the test by the scented and spicy scents of chili cakes, fried noodles, dholl puri and appetizing Chinese meatballs; a lot of appetizing snacks! If you wish to visit the Port Louis market during your stay in Mauritius in our luxury resort, do not hesitate to contact the concierge service.
