Tropical fruits in Mauritius

  • 08/11/2019

Coming on holiday to Mauritius means enjoying the abundance of these exotic fruits with meaningful names that carry the promise of sweetness and flavour. Bursting with sunshine and vitamins, the local fruits display bright colours and original shapes. While each season has its own star fruits, there are others that are less well known but just as surprising. Natural, transformed into jams, fruit jellies, candied, prepared in the local cuisine or used to make rhums and other cocktails, check out our non-exhaustive guide to the fruits of Mauritius.Mauritius, a fruitful land   With its warm, sunny tropical climate and favorable rainfall, Mauritius grows a wide variety of delicious fruit all year round. While many Mauritians have fruit trees such as mango, pawpaw, longan and banana in their gardens, many orchards provide the local gastronomic tables with pulpy, fragrant ones.   Mango, lychee and longan as the top three   Summer is the blessed season for the favourite fruits of Mauritians and visitors alike. These delicious fruits abound from December to March and delight those with a sweet tooth. Honor to the mango, this very fragrant red or yellow fruit, with its firm and sun-drenched flesh. The tastiest varieties are known as “Mangue José” or “Maison Rouge”, but there are hundreds of varieties in Mauritius with different shapes, colours and flavors. Ripe, they are eaten sliced, and green, they come in “achards”, fermented in vinegar and slightly spicy. They are also made into jam.   The lychee (called letchi in Mauritius) is mostly grown in large orchards, equipped to fight against the redoubtable predators that are the local bats and which plunder any tree not covered with nets. This red fruit with its tender and translucent flesh can be enjoyed without moderation as is, but it is also available in rhums. The longan, a small brown fruit usually found in private gardens, is very similar to the lychee in terms of flavor. Its season is shorter and it can be found on roadside stalls.Other exotic fruits worth discovering during your stay in Mauritius   Besides the classic papaya and banana, there are other unusual and tasty fruits. The breadfruit is a large green fruit with white and fragrant flesh, quite rare on the shelves, usually cooked with salt as a “gratin”.   The sliced carambola is star-shaped. Its colour varies from bright green to bright yellow and it is sweet when ripe. You can usually find them from February to July in Mauritius (https://www.lesfruitsetlegumesfrais.com/fruits-legumes/fruits-exotiques-et-tropicaux/carambole )   Guava is an amazing fruit. Red, it is the famous “Chinese guava” that is picked in Plaine Champagne in June and July. Green with deliciously fragrant white flesh, it grows in private gardens. It is eaten as is or in marmalade.   Watermelons, wild raspberries, avocados, passion fruit, bilimbi, etc. can also be found on the stalls.Where to find the best fruits in Mauritius?   Mauritius has a wide range of fruits to choose from all year round. One of the best places to find them is the local market in Port Louis (or any other local market in Mauritius), where you can find fresh fruit cheaper than in supermarkets or on roadside stalls. For high quality fruits, visit Vergers de La Bourdonnais in the north who also sell them in fruit jellies, exotic fruits, juices… (https://domainedelabourdonnais.com/fr/agrigulture-transformation/) While visiting Mauritius, fill up on vitamins and sweets thanks to the tropical fruits available all year round and bring them back as jams, rhums or fruit jellies.

  • 31/10/2019

In November the Mauritius Triathlon, the Indian Ocean Triathlon, will take place at the southwestern tip of the island. The ideal event to end a sporting season in style! Let’s face it, the Indian Ocean Triathlon is considered one of the most beautiful triathlons in the world. You have to go to the foot of Le Morne in Mauritius to understand what makes this triathlon so famous: a lagoon with crystal clear waters, filled with fish and corals of all kinds and colors, with Le Morne Brabant as a backdrop, and this “underwater waterfall” effect one of Mauritius’ signatures. Every year the participants hurry to reserve their bib to participate. As we close these lines there are still a few places left… so it may not be too late. The Indian Ocean Triathlon course includes nearly 70 km of competition divided into 1.8 km of swimming, 55 km of cycling and 12 km of running. The start of the race is on the beach of Le Morne at the foot of Le Morne Brabant. The participants throw themselves into the Indian Ocean and go for 1800 meters of swimming in clear water surrounded by a wide variety of fish species and vegetation in a thousand and one colors. According to the participants, none of them have ever swum in such an idyllic setting. Struggle and pain will soon be forgotten! Breathtaking landscapes will animate the second stage of the 55 km cycling tour. Different gradients will increase the intensity of the trip, but after a few pedals: lagoons, sugar cane and pineapple fields, coconut trees, the village of Bel Omble, Baie du Cap, will reward your efforts. The highly emblematic place of this event is the Chamarel pass. The Chamarel Pass? Famous for its 7-colored land and its magnificent waterfall gushing out of lush vegetation. It is a natural site composed of small hills of different tones, undulations of the terrain ranging from tawny to orange, passing through ochre. Something to motivate the participants! To finish off on a high note, the run will be the last stage with 12 km to cover between beaches and paths with a mythical finish. The loop is closed at the foot of Le Morne on the beach. Visit the botanical garden of Pamplemousses in the north of Mauritius

  • 17/10/2019

Located in the north of Mauritius, the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden was created in 1736, first as a vegetable garden for Mahé de Labourdonnais, Governor of Mauritius at the time. But it was not until 1767 that the garden took off with the vision of Pierre Poivre, botanist of the King and explorer at the time. The latter made the garden the vault of specimens acquired during his travels: manioc from Brazil, laurel from the West Indies, cinnamon from Malabar or breadfruit from the Philippines.  Visiting the garden is like entering another dimension: here abound the plant species that come to surround you from all sides, you will appreciate the perfumes of the flora of Mauritius.. Some are very impressive, such as the baobab at the entrance first, then the victoria amazonica, a species of giant water lily sleeping in its basin (one of the famous photos illustrating Mauritius), or the talipot, a variety of palm tree, also very large, which has the particularity of dying after its only bloom. You will admire the 95 species of palm trees from all over the world, but also araucarias, vacoas, ravenalas, guava trees. You will be dazzled by the scarlet of the flaming, bewitched by the smell of jasmine, mango and many spices such as cinnamon. This area, which is representative of the island’s biodiversity, preserves many species from all over the world, as well as some endemic species of the island (such as ebony wood) and Mascarenes. Surprising by its flora, it is also surprising thanks to the animals evolving freely, sometimes coming to greet you or accompany you in your discovery: birds like the Martin or the Cardinal haunt the area with butterflies; reptiles, fish, tenrecs, mongooses and other equally fascinating creatures are regularly present.  The garden retains the names of famous botanists and naturalists, most of whom have collaborated in its development. Thus, you will stroll along paths named after Labourdonnais, Pierre Poivre, Darwin and others of their colleagues, but also the writer Bernardin de Saint-Pierre and the heroes he created, Paul and Virginie. In this paradisiacal setting, you can even visit the fictional graves of these legendary lovers. You will not be surprised, in this fantastic setting, to discover yet another park of giant turtles and Java deer, magically emerging.
