Visit China Town in Port Louis during your Mauritius holidays

  • 19/12/2019
  • Culture

China Town, the nerve centre of Chinese immigration in Mauritius, is a spatio-temporal bubble where elements of the past and modern life are juxtaposed. Old and sometimes ruined shops, Mah-Jong houses, traditional restaurants and fortune tellers rub shoulders with brand new buildings and busy businessmen. This historic district of Port-Louis remains one of the best preserved in the Mauritian capital, despite the advanced decay of many of its old buildings.China Town is actually a very small district that runs along the Royal Road for about 500 meters. It was created by conurbation: during the first wave of immigration of Chinese workers to Mauritius during the 18th century, a few traders settled along the street in the centre of Port-Louis. At that time, all immigrants from China were systematically directed to China Town, where existing traders helped them to the best of their ability. As time went on, other businesses opened their doors in the surrounding area. In this foreign land where they did not understand the language, immigrants had a tendency to regroup. Everyone knows that you can find just about anything and everything. In the Win Tai Chong store, for example, if you go there a few days before the Chinese New Year, you will see fireworks enthusiasts looking for their favourite holiday items, shelves packed with dried or pickled vegetables, sauces and decorations, and so many customers that there will be so many of them on the sidewalk.Further up the street, the Atlantic Store is just as impressive, with its windows loaded with dishes, toys, firecrackers, fans, musical instruments and other unexpected objects. On the sidewalk, impatient customers line up to enjoy dumplings (a kind of local dim sum) and not far from the street vendor, an imperturbable old man supervises the unloading of his provisions, which immediately disappear at the back of the shop, behind a large red wooden door. Food stands are set up not far from traditional music groups, shopkeepers take their carefully selected products out on the sidewalk, while the streets, all lit by hundreds of red and yellow Chinese lanterns, are closed to traffic. On these lively nights, you could also meet dancers hiding timidly behind their fans, women dressed in qipao (a traditional Chinese dress), and even attend small Miss Chinatown beauty contests. This phenomenon is due to a geological formation that is unique in the world. During the helicopter flight over the island, you really get the impression of an underwater waterfall pouring its dark waters into the abyss. The view is absolutely spectacular and mystifying, with a perfect illusion. The phenomenon has geological explanations linked to the volcanic formation of the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean 8 million years ago.   Located on one of the largest underwater ocean plateaus, less than 150 metres below sea level a sandfall goes down to more than 4000 meters deep at the bottom of the abyss and as a result of this process ocean currents push the sand from nearby beaches off the plateaus, producing the effect of a waterfall. Capture this beautiful phenomenon among your other memories of this unforgettable helicopter tour. How to book a helicopter flight over Mauritius? Opening of the Splash n Fun Leisure Park in Belle Mare

  • 14/11/2019
  • Aquatic activities

The Aquatic Recreation Park in the east of Mauritius has finally reopened its doors. Since October 17, the Splash N Fun Leisure Park has been open to the public in Belle-Mare. Attractions include the Constrictor, Black Hole and Wave River, but also an adult pool. The public will also be able to enjoy “terrestrial” activities in a virtual game and 7D cinema room.Safety is a must, says Sugar Investment Trust, manager of the former Belle Mare Waterpark. Opened in 2000, the Waterpark closed in 2013. The reason was that the Sugar Investment Trust (SIT) had debts of more than Rs 2 billion. To relaunch it, there was a first attempt to find an investor, but in vain. As the infrastructure was already there and given the lack of leisure activities in Mauritius, the SIT decided to find the funds to revisit and reopen it. After 18 months of work for its restructuring, makeover and new attractions with White Water West as its promoter, the Splash n Fun Leisure Park opened its doors to Mauritians and tourists on Saturday 19 October 2019. The leisure center has old attractions that have been revisited. For example, thrusters have been added to the Wave River for more thrills. The Black Hole has also been revisited with neon lights and several slides have been added to please visitors. Children can take to the water in the Aqua Play, which boasts a magnificent and enchanting setting. The reopening of the Belle-Mare water park will not only offer Mauritians an affordable recreational activity, but will also boost economic development in the region through job creation. In addition, Mauritians and tourists will converge in large numbers, which will benefit local entrepreneurs. Rides are also available for those who don’t like slides and other water attractions. Other attractions will be unveiled at the end of the year – during the school and holiday season. For the public, a restaurant, a food court and four food kiosks have been set up. For any activity booking during your stay in our luxury resort, do not hesitate to contact the concierge service.
