Mauritius has earned a reputation as a top-class holiday destination and offers a wide range of original and exciting water and land-based activities to its visitors. Among these is the opportunity to visit parts of the island on horseback. Whether you are a novice or a skilled rider, make the most of this exceptional activity by taking a ride on beautiful, well-trained old racehorses. From sugar cane fields to peaceful countryside and beautiful beaches, choose your favourite route and let your dream come true.
Mauritius is home to the oldest race track in the southern hemisphere, the Champ de Mars, where in the 19th century, soldiers stationed in the garrison used to perform riding exercises. Horse racing is one of the most shared passions of Mauritians today. Consequently, riding clubs feature beautiful horses, high on the withers and former steeds that are now retired and perfect for horse riding. These beautiful, well-trained and docile animals are ideal for a free ride in the countryside or for a romantic stroll with your loved one along a picturesque beach on one of these superb mounts.
There are several riding schools in the north of the island. Among them are the Trou aux Biches riding center, close to the beautiful public beach, as well as the one located in Grand-Baie. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, you will be warmly welcomed by a dedicated team and beautiful horses. You can learn to ride, but also acquire dressage and jumping techniques in the quarries built on an old sugar mill or simply enjoy the scenery during a stroll.
For your safety, we have strict rules regarding the maximum weight of riders, compulsory use of a riding bomb and the respect of the Instructors’ directives.
Some of the centers in the north offer rural and exotic rides. Forbach Stables near Grand Bay is one such center. Its stables organize rides through the countryside and sugar cane plantations, with individual or group packages. If you want to learn how to jump or dressage, head to the Club d’Équitation du Nord, with its riding center located on the former grounds of the Mon Loisir sugar estate, making it the ideal setting for a fun riding day.
Horse Riding Delights, in Mont Choisy, offers the opportunity to explore this beautiful estate on horseback, guided by a professional instructor. With rides lasting approximately one and a half hours, the pleasure of riding at your own pace is complemented by the joys of discovering historic sites and local wildlife in an exceptional setting. The “Ecuries de la Vieille Cheminée” in Triolet proposes rides for beginners and experienced riders. These horse trips will take you through the Mauritian countryside, sugar cane plantations and local villages.
An early morning gallop along the pristine beach in the idyllic setting of Mon Choisy and getting your horse into the water is an image that many visitors to Mauritius dream of. Several riding centers organize such rides, either in the early morning or to admire the beautiful Mauritian sunsets. Such is the case of the Trou aux Biches center, located near the beautiful public beach, as well as the one in Grand-Baie.
